Gas, like all rare resources, is only available on certain planet(s). In your case, gas only resides on the planet Zeus, located in the Castor system. You'll need a lvl 35 commander and a massive army in order to set up a colony and get a node. There are only about 60 gas nodes, and none were free when I wrote this message.
